You Know? |
People
have two sets of teeth in their lives? The first set are called milk teeth
or baby teeth and these usually fall out when you are about seven years
old. The second set grow in their place and last you for the rest of your
life (if you look after them properly and visit your dentist).

Cavity
Q and A. |
Q:
What is a cavity?
A: A
cavity is a hole in your tooth.
Q:
What causes cavities?
A: That's
a good question. Everyone has acids in their mouth - they're what helps
you to dissolve your food. Your teeth have a coating called enamel that
protects them from the acids so they don't dissolve also! Cavities usually
happen when there are too many acids, and they sit on top of the teeth
for too long. Sooner or later, the acids will begin to dissolve through
the enamel and make a squishy hole in the tooth. Once they get through
the enamel, they can go deeper into your tooth very quickly.
Q:
Do cavities hurt?
A: Not
always. By the time a cavity starts to hurt, it's already very deep into
your tooth. You might not know you have a cavity, unless you go to your
dentist often for checkups. The sooner your dentist finds a cavity beginning,
the less damage it can do.
Q:
How can I prevent cavities?
A: BRUSH
BRUSH BRUSH! Kids should brush their teeth three times every day. When
you brush your teeth you scrape all of the acids off the enamel so they
don't have time to dig in! Flossing between teeth gets all the crud out
that your toothbrush can't reach!
Also, sugar has lots
of acids. By eating healthy foods and not too much candy, you can reduce
the risk of cavities.
